Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2023/24 #77

26th April, 2024

Congratulations to Parkgate who won both of their midweek matches to become champions in what has been a remarkable chase for the Toolstation NCEL Division One title.

The first of their two victories came on Tuesday night when a Ross Duggan double, added to by Jack Haslam, helped them to a 3-2 defeat of visitors Retford United.

Derek O'Connor got both of the Badgers' goals who end the regular season in fifth spot and now travel to either Beverley Town or Shirebrook Town in the Semi-Finals of the play-offs for a chance for promotion to the Premier Division.

Both Beverley and Shirebrook won on Wednesday to keep themselves in the title race, albeit only for a further 24 hours, and it means the top three have all broken through the 100-point barrier.

Benjamin Hinchliffe and Matthew Plumber netted for Beverley in a 2-1 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic after Andrew Horbury had given the hosts an early lead.

And, Shirebrook beat hosts Yorkshire Amateur 5-1 with two goals from Bradley Kerr, added to by one each from Nathan Watson, Kieran Watson and Anthony Dwyer.

The Ammers, whose goal came from Birama Diallo, are confirmed in the relegation zone as a result of that defeat and must now wait to see if a reprieve keeps them at Step 6.

It meant that a win on Thursday for Parkgate at Wombwell Town would secure them the title and Haslam and Duggan were on the scoresheet once again as a 2-0 victory gave them an unassailable advantage at the summit.

It is a very well deserved title for Parkgate, especially with an incredibly busy last couple of weeks due to a fixtures backlog, and their achievement was shown by the congratulations that came from all of their title challengers via social media at the final whistle.

Shirebrook can still mathematically overtake Beverley for second spot but would need a massive victory over champions Parkgate on Monday night to do so.

Wakefield AFC, meanwhile, are the fourth team in the play-offs and ended their regular campaign with a 4-1 victory at Nostell Miners Welfare.

Mason Rubie scored twice whilst Jack Cairney and Callum Charlton added to the tally late on after Jack Bull had given the hosts a 70th minute equaliser.

Elsewhere, Joseph Navier's opener, a Luca Bolino penalty and an own goal secured Harrogate Railway Athletic a 3-0 win at Athersley Recreation.

And, it finished 3-3 between Clay Cross Town and Armthorpe Welfare, Logan Liggins, Jake Yeamans and Callam Lytham netting for Clay Cross whilst Welfare's goals came from Daniel Bambrough, Luke Williams and Harley McCormack.

There were two games in the Premier Division with Barton Town winning 2-1 at home to Silsden AFC, Reece Moody and Kian Salter striking for the Swans and Kayle Price with a consolation for the visitors.

There was a 1-1 draw between hosts Hallam and Knaresborough Town, Scott Ruthven's early deadlock breaker for the home side quickly cancelled out by Philip Milsom.

And, the double is still on for Premier Division champions Emley AFC as they prevailed 2-1 at Rossington Main to reach the JCP Construction League Cup Final.

Ruben Jerome gave the Pewits a fourth minute lead, Lewis Archer's penalty restored parity on the quarter-of-an-hour mark, and James Walshaw grabbed what proved to be the winner midway through the second period.
